“Monk, please give me a cup of tea.

(The day we went to meet a monk, side trees were fresh, the sky was clear and ground was calm. As we walked, we arrived at the entrance of Seokcheon Buddhist Temple. There was a store pillar which has a significant story. Hamatombstone. A hermitage that was build to commemorate General Yi is at beginning of Seokcheon Buddhist Temple. So in front of Hamatombstone a king also got off a horse and walked on foot.)

(We were guided to a separate building next to the main temple. The scent of tea was soft in the room. In the middle of the room there was a desk with a prepared tea set and many kinds of tea, we waited for the monk, sitting on cushions in front of desk. The calmness of the temple made us calm. After a while Jinok monk who wore gray Korean full-dress attire entered the room with a benevolent smile. Refreshments which work up an appetite came after the monk had entered.)

"Monk, Do you like tea?"

(Q : Please, explain about tea. I know about green tea. but I don't know about red tea and puer tea.”
“The exact meaning of 'tea' is the leaves of the tree. But we call the drink that brew leaves in hot water 'tea'. There are many kinds of tea. Depending on how to make, there is 'green tea' which is not fermented and is parched, 'oolong tea' which is a little fermented and parched and 'red tea' which is fully fermented. Puer tea which I mentioned before, is a kind of fermented tea made in Ywinnan, China. After drinking some green tea, I will show you the taste of puer tea.”)

(Q : I heard that you like tea very much. Is there a special opportunity where you like the tea?
"Having a Buddhist service is a first step when we enter the Buddhist priesthood. Tea is always on hand at a Buddhist service. Also Monks like to drink tea routinely in temples. And, then we are familiar with tea. Maybe the price that I paid for teas for neighborhoods until now will be over a billion won.")

(Q : Is there an order when we drink a cup of tea?
"It is tea ceremony. So we should be polite even when we drink tea. It is routine that we boil the water, and drink tea. We can sublimate the common things 'Do', if we pull ourselves together. However mind is the most important thing so we don't have to obsess about formality.")

"Do you like coffee, too?"

(Q : What are the differences between coffee and tea?
"It is interesting that comparing coffee and tea. Each of them is a representative drink of east and west. Unlike tea that is made from leaves coffee is made from seeds in the fruit. That is coffee beans. Leaves have a trait which lowers the energy of space, so when we drink tea, we are calmed down. But seeds have a trait which break themselves and rise so when we drink coffee we can get a energy.")

(Q : Tea makes low and coffee makes rise? It's interesting......
"But you should not think it is totally different. Priests drink coffee to help them stay awake when they pray, while they drink tea to practice asceticism. Most of all coffee and tea are associated with agriculture and nomadic culture. So, there is a difference between a coffee drinking area and a tea drinking area. Coffee is perfect to drink in areas where people enjoy eating meat. Therefore you should not judge tea's good and bad points simply."

(Q : Do you like coffee, too?
"I sometimes drink it, but I don't like it. I try to drinking a cup of tea but there isn't an appropriate area where I can drink the tea. So, I sometimes drink a cup of coffee. But people drink tea more than coffee around the world. When I went to the France, rich men drink tea better than coffee. I think drinking a cup of tea can become the upper class culture in the tea house.")

"Monk, how green tea?"

(Q : It is wider than 150 football fields that the green tea field appears in Boseong which produces a number of teas over the last 5 years, isn't it?
"Seokcheon Buddhist Temple manages Yeon-ggot nursery, in there we teach young children how to drink a cup of tea. Then, some interesting things happen. Children came to me to drink a cup of tea. They knew the taste of tea. For not coffee but people, our tea become this. We don't teach people how to drink tea, TV teaches people how to drink coffee to all Korean people.")

(Q : Tea is changed like our taste, isn't it?
"Yes, recently, people develop fusion food which has merged Korean food and Western food. So, It is tasty to contemporary people. Similarly, tea needs fusion for many people to access it easily. For example, make canned beverage and cake and candy by tea. However, any case we must not forget something that tea is not just eating but eating with manners.")

(After interview, there was an old dog on the Seokcheon Buddhist Temple yard. The monk explained, although a dog is actually 20 years-old but we consider a dog 140 years-old because dog is aged 7 times more than humans.)

(And there is a girl who is aged such as us beside it. Although she looks like a little bit fool, she doesn't like to live in an urban area. We that are raised by coffee feel her like tea given by the monk.)
